Humor Used in Eclipse
In Eclipse Stephanie Meyer uses a bit of humor when she is writing about the vampire and werewolf interactions. She uses humor in a mean sort of way, if your talking about humor in Eclipse the humor would probably mean that if the vampires and werewolves found themselves in the same place and the vampires said something that people might call humor, it would be aggravating for the werewolves but cruelly funny for the vampires. This lessens as the book goes on because the vampires and werewolves are learning how to get along better and respect eachother.
An example of this type of humor is on page 77 and 78 when Jacob decides he wants to talk with Edward when Bella and Edward are going to school:
"You should have called us," Edward said in a steel-hard voice. "Sorry," Jacob answered, his face twisting into a sneer. "I don't have leeches on my speed dial." "You could have reached me at Bella's house, of course." Jacob's jaw flexed, and his brows pulled together. He didn't answer. "This is hardly the place, Jacob. Could we discuss this later?" "Sure, sure. I'll stop by your crypt after school." Jacob.
That particular conversation continued, but I just wanted to give an example of the specific form of humor used in Eclipse. During this conversation, if the werewolves had been there, they would have laughed malevolently after Jacob said both of his sentences. The effect, in this case, is that the reader understands more about the ancient hatred between vampires and werewolves. The general affect of this type of humor is that you know that instead of the light, humor of people saying funny things, it creates a more serious mood.
